Corey Feldman Is ‘Deeply Sorry’ for Dropping American Flag During Today Show Performance

Corey Feldman was seeking redemption Thursday when he sang live on the Today show for the second time, nearly one month after he was met with considerable backlash for his first performance.

However, his latest showing was clouded with controversy after the former child actor dropped an American flag on the ground while belting out his single, “Take a Stand.”

After Feldman, 45, said, “We love you America” following his four-minute set, anchor Tamron Hall picked up the flag off the ground to hand back to him. Viewers quickly took to social media with many expressing their outrage and dismay over The Goonies star’s action.

Late Thursday evening, Feldman issued a statement exclusively to PEOPLE with an explanation and an apology.

“We were excited and grateful to be asked to return to the Today show, but there wasn’t much time to prepare. We scrambled to find an American flag to use as a patriotic symbol at the last minute and with no rehearsal,” he stated.

“Once I was on stage, my brain reverted to my choreography, which was to throw my hands up in the air with a peace sign. As a dancer, my instinct is to drop anything in my hands.”

Feldman concluded: “In that live moment, it came off as wrong and for that I’m deeply sorry. It was the exact opposite of my intention.”

His new song, “Take A Stand,” was actually a musical homage to his country, as he explained to Hall, “I’m not letting the bullies get to us… This song is for America.”

“We’re doing something new that hasn’t been done before,” he told TODAY’s Tamron Hall. “But it’s all about innovation and being an artist, and we can’t be afraid to share our art. … This song is for America.”

And he did not disappoint with his second performance, in which he started out with several more layers of clothing than he ended up with by song’s end.

Both performances have been in support of his new double CD, “Angelic 2 the Core,” which was released in June.

His September show made headlines across the country that wavered between outright admiration and poking fun, but in general could be summed up as “gobsmacked.”

Celebrities lined up on social media to praise him, including Pink and “Stand By Me” co-star Jerry O’Connell. But others weren’t so kind, and as Feldman explained on Thursday, words from a friend helped make him feel better after social media lit up.

The friend reminded him that many of the greats — from Kiss to Nirvana — were not necessarily appreciated right away.

“That really turned it around for me,” he said. “I’m like, you know, you’re right: a lot of people get hate in the beginning.”

Corey unleashed!

But it was all in a day’s work for Feldman, who has passion to spare, as he explained in a heartfelt essay exclusively written for TODAY.

“As an artist, I’ve been bullied, I’ve been picked on strictly because I spread a message of love,” he wrote. “As an artist, if I fail and make mistakes, that’s when my critics have a field day.

Feldman dedicated the performance to America. “I’m not letting the bullies get to us,” he told Tamron Hall.

“However, the most painful part is when you get it all right, and remember all the parts, yet you open your computer, and read comments that would tear a hole through any commoners’ hearts.”

“I must keep moving forward, no matter what. Baring my heart through my song. But just like the rest of you, I only strive to belong.”

Corey Feldman addresses bullying: ‘I must keep moving forward’

Corey Feldman had TODAY viewers — and most of the internet — talking after a performance of his song “Go 4 It” on Sept. 16. Feldman wrote a response to critics of his performance exclusively for TODAY — and be sure to tune in Thursday for his return to the show.

I, artist!

As an artist, I bare my heart and soul for my love of creating art. Art is, after all, a form of personal self-expression. Through my art, I express my tears, my joy, my pain, my sorrows. I spread love with my messages of hope for tomorrow.

As an artist, I’ve been bullied, I’ve been picked on strictly because I spread a message of love.

As an artist, I take chances by creating new dances, and I risk it all while trying not “2” fall.

As an artist, if I fail and make mistakes, that’s when my critics have a field day. However, the most painful part is when you get it all right, and remember all the parts, yet you open your computer, and read comments that would tear a hole through any commoners’ hearts.

As an artist, I must stand strong. I must keep moving forward, no matter what. Baring my heart through my song. But just like the rest of you, I only strive to belong.

As an artist, I’m predisposed to be overly critical of my own imperfections, and my unfashionable clothes, because my creative mind may see things quite differently than others. But that doesn’t make us any less brothers and sisters, after we are all connected. Though our egos try to lie and tell us we are all unique, as if we were the only one selected.

As an artist, I simply do all that I can to bring a bit of joy and entertainment for my fellow man.

I’m no better than you; I’m no less of a man. But I’m a flawed, fearless artist, presenting a band. My hope is you will see me, hear and feel me, and one day understand, that underneath the art, I’m simply a man.
