The rifle used by Crooks, who shot and tried to assassinate President Trump, had been bought by his father back in 2013, that means gun control legislation would have done nothing about it even assuming that was a desired outcome, but why should a minor detail like that stop the New York Times.
Few Lawmakers Called for Tougher Gun Laws After Trump Shooting – New York Times
Does the paper have an actual argument to make? No. But that’s a minor detail.
“Little was known about the gunman, leading to some uncertainty about which gun safety issues were directly implicated.”
So what? Ignorance is no reason not to shout things anyway.
“Still, the lack of such details has seldom stopped members of Congress from responding to gun violence with renewed calls for tougher firearm safety measures.”
The New York Times isn’t making the case here that it thinks it is. Members of Congress spouting off slogans when they don’t know what actually happened just further discredits the whole cause.
But the New York Times then demonstrates that it isn’t familiar with the basic details here.
“lawmakers tried but failed to get Republicans to agree to add a ban on the sale and possession of assault weapons for individuals under the age of 21. The National Rifle Association lobbied hard against that provision.”
The rifle wasn’t bought by Crooks, but his dad, who was older than 21.
“Some Democrats privately said that even an assassination attempt on the leader of the Republican Party was likely to only further cement the longtime congressional gridlock on guns. They compared it to the Republican reaction to the 2017 shooting of Representative Steve Scalise, Republican of Louisiana, who was gravely wounded when a gunman opened fire on a congressional softball practice in Virginia.”
A “gunman”? Try a fanatical Bernie Sanders supporter and MSNBC viewer with a hit list of Republicans in his pocket.
The New York Times unintentionally shows why lefties focus on gun control, because it distracts from the actual shootings.
We don’t need gun control, we need radical control.

Yes, yes, yes!!!

There’s a good topic. That was the Czar’s mistake, not keeping the leftist radicals under control. I noticed that all through Trotsky’s books (exhausting reading). The Czar would give leftist radicals (even such as Stalin) slap on the wrist sentences, like having to live in an rural area for a few years, but which allowed them to slip back into the big cities unobserved, to continue their activities.

Well, it took two days instead of two hours, but you can always count on the Left to start hawking gun control.
The left wants to feel safe while disarming the rest of us.

The correct answer for gun rights is always more guns in the hands of good people.
If anything, we should encourage and allow good citizens to use the guns against the criminals anytime they are in fear for their life or bodily injury. And to protect their property.

After getting over the initial shock of the assignation attempt my next thought was, now comes the calls for gun control.

Mentally Ill people don’t obey laws. Most of them are loners who are bitter at society and want to end their life. They listen to violent rhetoric and watch violent movies and want to repeat the actions for their own glory as martyrs. We will never get solutions from an administration that does not want law, order, civility, or America to exist as we have know America for 248 years. Biden’s comments about putting a bullseye on Trump is the kind of rhetoric that incites this kind of violence.
SPURWING PLOVER says
The New York Slimes spent all those four years trashing Trump then calls for more useless Gun Control Laws over this just typical of a leftists rag who supports the leftist and the Demon-Rats to

IMHO Thomas Matthew Crooks was a psychopath, which description comprises (1) percent of the US general population, and also noted that 1 in 5 inmates in US prisons are diagnosed as psychopaths. This observation is also based upon interviews of Crooks HS classmates whose descriptions of his personality and behavioral traits indicate the dark, visceral psychosis of the psychopathy spectrum. The US Secret Service even had him flagged as a potential threat but did nothing.
As an anecdote, psychopath’s favorite songs were, Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” The opening lyrics of Lose Yourself opens a portal into the labyrinth of psychological dark matter swirling around in Thomas Crooks primeval psychopathic mind.

Unsurprising. The establishment will do ANYTHING to disarm Americans.
