The Green Life

April 14th, 2008 · Notebook ·

I’ve been thinking about the whole “Green Initiative” lately. I’ve seen moms (through their blogs) start getting into it. I have a brother in law who does it. It sounds interesting to me. But then I see people saying, “Must eat organic only!” or “Healthy FTW!!”. That’s just not me. Yea, I get my veggies and my meats and such. I go through the whole food pyramid. I must be doing something right because I’m not dead yet. But I can’t see myself living the life they’re talking about, with the organic foods and such. I think the only time I eat like that is when I spend a day at the hubby’s parent’s house. Even then I go nuts cause there is never anything decent to drink. I think I would miss my Pepsi and other munchies too much if I were to eat healthier. I’m not a rabbit. ;) But as far as the money saving and recycling, that I can do with no problem. I just gotta learn to pinch pennies, so to speak. Who knows. I might give the whole “Frugal Living” thing a try. We’ll see how it goes.

Hey - I’m glad your starting to think about it. Gotta start somewhere! I once heard and now take on as my little motto: I’ll always have a little plastic in my granola. And that’s how I feel. I’m into it, but into what works for me. I’m not ready to give up toilet paper quite yet!

I wish I could be more “green” when it comes to eating organic food. A lot of it tastes really great! But I love my Coca Cola and other foods that are bad for me too much to COMPLETELY give them up.

I tried to eat healthier for a while after I started getting really bad stomach pains. Since I’ve always been really skinny I’ve never cared about what I ate… but when I started to get stomach pains that pretty much prevented me from walking, I sorta figured I had to do something about it. Ha ha.
I ate healthy for about a month. And then once I started losing more weight.. I stopped. But I did stop drinking soda completely. It was hard to break my 2-3 pepsi a day addiction… but I’m proud of myself. ;D

Reply: Congrats! But with me…no pepsi = dead Jenny. xD

Greens are very good and essentials for a fit and healthy body. Many people avoid eating greens but I suggest that every body should have greens atleast 5 days a week.

I must admit, I’m totally into the Green Initiative stuff these days. I love buying organics, recycled stuff, energy-saving light bulbs, etc. Unfortunately, the organic aisle is always twice as expensive as normal foodstuffs, which doesn’t bode well for someone on a student budget. =/

Organic foods… I’m not sold on them yet, especially with their prices. I do try to eat whole wheat instead of bleached flour when I can and I’m trying to eliminate everything with high fructose corn syrup from my diet (except the occasional Dr. Pepper on weekends).

I am all about reducing pollution as well, because I don’t want to dirty up where I live. Where the green campaigns lose me and make me want to buy a Ford F-350 and turn on all my lights is when people talk about Global Warming. If they would just stop at “buy recycled… reduce and reuse what you can… don’t waste energy and dispose of batteries properly” I would be out in the streets with them. But they have to bring up GW and so I poke fun at them instead.

Organic?…lets say…I try to be green in all sense, very difficult so, but you get used to. I believe it is never late to start. I am getting really worried about the rubbish I see in the field, in the burn, on the beach…every where. It is time to watch and choose what kind of world we want for us. I want the best. How about you?

My husband and I are pretty good on the “green” front. We try to purchase as many organic foods as possible, but sometimes its near impossible where we live. My husband drives to and from work, otherwise we pretty much walk to where we need to go (great exercise!). We do composting, recycling, etc… and seriously our house looks like we’re Amish at night time because we rarely have lights on until 8pm or so.

Good luck if you choose to go green and good luck becoming frugal. Take it one step at a time, as some people find themselves overwhelmed when they switch everything at once.

Reply: I shall do that. Thanks for the tip.

I eat pretty healthy, but I have never really bought too much organic stuff. My mother does though, and recently after reading up about the stuff that can be in milk, I am strongly considering going green on my milk consumption.

Going organic is really good for the planet and for everyone…. however, it’s not quite nice for your pocket book because organic foods in general are more expensive.

I try to eat as organic as possible, but it’s not something that I can budget for the extra expense.

Jenny, do you have a subscribe to comments button?

Reply: Yea, it’s at the top of the comments section. I should fix it, it looks kinda un-noticable.

going organic or otherwise, really boils down to how you feel about it.. if your prepared to do it, to commit to it, and most importantly if you (at the very least) like it… then go for it… if its the other way around, then perhaps its not time yet…

Good luck if you do try, although I must admit it’s something I struggle with. I often think it would be nice to be more healthy. I start out this plan the end up getting annoyed by the fact I should be allowed to have the things I like. :P Whoops.

I haven’t heard of Green Initiatives, but I was introduced to the “natural” world about two years ago by my boss. I agree, I will not give up EVERYTHING, I’ll allow myself a cheat day here and there, but I definitely want to enhance our daily lives. It’s to the farmer’s market this weekend!

Organic foods taste great! But it can get kinda pricey. I do what I can in small phases to try and do “good”.

Found your site from a comment you left on theopmomblog.com. Thanks, so much!

Ugh organic food? I heard that it’s nasty. I wouldn’t eat it and my kids wouldn’t eat it. I feed them veggies and meats and plus being on a budget we cannot afford organic good, isn’t it expensive?

Oh and thanks for commenting on my site. :)

Reply: I’m not doing organic foods either. I know they’re nasty. My brother in law makes me eat ‘em when I go there. But I wanna start eating healthier mostly for weight loss.

Organic foods sometimes seem like a fad. They are in one day and out the next. Personally, I say do whatever works for you and your pocket book. I have found that organic veggies can be quite pricey and make a dent in my pocket book over time.

I can cope with frugal living for a while though! :-)

  19. Sara said,

I’ve been wanting to do this as well. but it’s expensive sometimes.

Its good that you are going green and helping the world but I think eating organic food is not enough , we have to do much more things like using more things which are eco friendly.

Great to hear. I’m a bit ‘green’ myself, in the Irish sort of way. I do step dancing, love Celtic rock and fantasize about Colin Farrell. And of course I recycle, when it’s convenient, that is.

Just kidding. I don’t recycle at all!!!

Hey, I found you through the Mixx. My contribution to being green has been using cloth diapers for the last three years. I like them so much I even wrote up a “how-to” page about them at http://www.squidoo.com/clothdiaperingbaby

Anyway, good luck with eating organic. We try to, but it ends up being so much more expensive.

  24. Richard said,

I totally agree with you. On my personal menu there are a lot of veggies and i really eat healthy. But sometimes you really want some kind of soft drink or fast food and this really doesn´t harm you.

    Hi Jen

The good news is that organically produced versions of virtually all foods and drinks are available now. Along with your staples like meat, vegetables, fruit and bread, we have organic chocolate, wine, beer, and soft drinks including organic PEPSI!!

So, you can help your health and that of the environment and still enjoy your favourite munchies.

    Try it. I am :0)
