In my child’s eyes…

What do you see when you look at me? A source of food — a warm, soft place to suck. Sometimes while nursing, you play with my hair or the buttons on my shirt or my bracelet. Sometimes you put your fingers in my mouth. Sometimes you latch yourself on because you can’t wait for me to get settled. My body isn’t off-limits to you. Food now! I’m yours.
What do you see when you look at me? I’m glad you don’t care if I wear makeup or not. I wish you had a pretty mama to look at all the time. I hope my looks don’t matter to you. What do you search for in my face — a smile, a happy glance in my tired eyes, just the fact I’m paying attention to you? I see you! I’m yours.
What do you see when you look at me? Do you know what a mama is? You are my baby, and I am your mama. That means I love you and take care of you. Do you think I’m doing a good job? Do you wish you had a different mama? Did I do a disservice to you by making you be born and taking you out of heaven? I can’t help it. I love you! I’m yours.
What do you see when you look at me? Sometimes you see clouds. At times, you have seen the back of me, walking away. Sometimes, my tears. That’s not the mama I want you to have. Being a mama can be tough. But so can being a baby. You are doing your best at being a baby! I’m doing my best, too. You and me, kid! I’m yours.
What do you see when you look at me? Someone to stroke your head. Someone to make you feel better. Someone who is there when you wake up in the dark. I want to be there for you. I want to be there when you discover an ant for the first time — and when you discover the stars. I want to be there when you win and when you lose. I want to pray over you every night. I hope you will see all of these in me. Take your time! I’m yours.

That is so sweet. I never thought about having a child and how they look at you and what they think about you in that way. At some point, I felt like I was going to cry. But seeing a dedicated mother, and seeing what a lucky baby that is, I COULDN’T cry.

I love this line and it will always be true. No matter that they stop being babies and before you know it they are looking you straight in the eye, or even towering over you. Even threatening to grow right up and walk out the door to adventures of their own! They are my babies and I am their mama. It’s always been and always will be. Lovely post!

I love this post. No matter how big they grow, they are our babies.

There is something about them calling you “Mama” that just melts the heart. I love when they call me that. And it sounds like you are doing great.
