My Little Guitar Hero
October 18th, 2007 · Notebook ·
My son loves music. In fact, he loves “playing guitar” (you know, when they don’t actually have one, but they do that thing with their hands?) whenever he hears music, which is all the time in our house. And he didn’t stop “playing” when we were at my grandmother’s house last weekend either. I get the hint.
His babysitter has a guitar and a set of bongo’s that he loves to play with when he is over there. It’s a fight to try and get him off of them. He also keep asking for one every time we go to Target.
So I want to get him a guitar he can play with whenever he wants. I found one for about 20$ at B&N that would be nice for him and it wouldn’t be a total loss if he went out and busted it in one way or another. My grandmother told me I should nurture this interest. Fine. No problem. Music is fine. He can like it all he wants. But the support stops at drums. At least until we get a home where he can play somewhere I can’t hear it. Yes I’m a mean mommy. I hate loud noises, which is why I never joined band in school.
I think the whole playing instruments thing might help him with his frustration and attitude issues as well. Yea, he’s only three, but damn! I know kids better behaved then him and their younger then him. So I’ll have to see how much money I have and then order it for him. And we might never get it away from him. At least we’ll know it will be well loved. ![]()

Ah, air guitar. I think it’s wise to encourage an interest in music without sacrificing your own hearing and peace of mind. So the real guitar will be good and then he can move on to playing air drums if he really wants.

How cool. Music is actually really great for kids. It helps develop the same part of your brain that makes you good at math. Listen to grams, she’s right!

My son and my daughter both have small guitars. They love having them. Neither takes it seriously, of course, being 2-1/2 and 5, but they do enjoy them.

Aw, that’s so cute :D! I can just imagine your little boy hammering away at an imaginary guitar.

That’s a good idea, you never know, he may be a really talented guitarist when he grows up!

I started studying piano at 3. Now I write music for tv and film. i’ve played for 2 presidents including a performance at the white house, and have traveled to 24 countries . . . i’m still remarkably ill-behaved as an adult.

That’s cute. I hope you have enough money to get him one. Fair warning though, the little girls will be all over him when they find out that he can play. lol.
I think I would stop at drums too. But then again, my fiance is wanting to build a house, the basement will be soundproff for his freakin suround sound…we could have drums and other loud things in there! lol.

I love playing air guitar.
I do it without noticing sometimes, it’s a little embarrassing.

Haha, that’s sweet.
Yeah, I saw this kid drum set and I was like… I’m gonna buy that for my kid (when I have one).

Following from your comment left on my site… guitar is a personal thing that will grow with age… personally, it changed my life. I’m more disciplined because of it and i think your son sounds a lot like I was in my younger years. Please DO nurture this interest… who knows, maybe when you’re 45 or 50 he’ll buy you a nice mansion with what he earned
GOOD LUCK!
p.s. a little tip, go really cheap until you personally start to recognize songs, then that’s the time to upgrade to something more substantial.

trust me when i tell you, from experience of both drums and guitar…noise is noise!!!!! but, yes, it is good to nurture their interests. you never know if you have a budding rock star on your hands!!! after all, they may be able to take care of us mommies in our ripe old ages!

That is so cute! My son loves music too. Whenever music is on, he always gets up and begins to dance lol. I agree with Melissa, I think it’s great that you bought him a guitar

You might want to swing by a few of your local or semi-local pawn shops, you’d be surprised at the good instruments you can find in them sometimes.
I got an aria acoustic years ago for around $10.
$20 is an awesome amount for a guitar as well and you’re right, it probably will help him with his.. attitude. Plus it’ll get him out of your hair for at least a few hours
hehe

I think that learning your son how to play the guitar on one of those small instruments is the greatest thing you could do. This way you really start his passion for music.

It’s great that he is getting interested at a young age. If he keeps it up, he will definitely d great things in music.

That put a smile on my face. I support music, but drums it taking it a little to far.
Got to agree with that.
